Laser Assisted Hatching
Laser-assisted hatching is a cutting-edge technique used during in vitro fertilization (IVF) to improve the chances of embryo implantation. This method involves using a laser to create a small opening in the outer layer of the embryo (the zona pellucida), facilitating the embryo’s ability to “hatch” and implant into the uterine lining.
Who could benefit from assisted hatching?
- Advanced maternal age >37 years old
- Thick or abnormal zona pellucida
- Patients with 2 or more previous failed IVF cycles
- Frozen embryo transfer cycles
- Poor quality/ slow developing embryos
- Embryos with excessive fragments
- Embryos formed from invitro matured oocytes
How Does Laser-Assisted Hatching Work?
- Day 3 or Day 5-6 of Embryo Development: The procedure is typically performed when the embryo is at the blastocyst stage (Day 5-6) or occasionally at the cleavage stage (Day 3), depending on the clinical scenario.
- Laser Application: A fine, focused laser is used to create a small, controlled opening in the zona pellucida, the outer protective layer of the embryo.
- Embryo Transfer: After the laser-assisted hatching is completed, the embryo is transferred to the uterus, where it can more easily implant into the uterine lining.
Risks with Assisted hatching:
Usually there is no risk with minimal chance of monozygotic twinning
